In this master class Vibeke Flesland Havre will focus on the method she has developed to work with new audiences and performers.
She will focus on why it is important to create relevant and engaging theatre for young people from different social backgrounds.
She will use examples of how this way of working also attracts new, and often hard to reach, audiences.
This is a practical workshop where you will test the various techniques on the floor. Havre will build up each day as a storytelling workshop, and end with a short evaluation.
She will also involve the participants on how they can implement what they have learned in their own artistic practice.

This workshop is suitable for professional performing artists, directors, playwrights, and actors.

In recent years, the terms "citizen's theatre" and "reality theatre" have been increasingly used to describe a theatrical performance. Now, you can enjoy a three-day workshop where Vibeke Flesland Havre will define these terms and present a range of techniques for creating theater from lived experiences.

Vibeke Flesland Havre has been the director of Bergen Citizen Stage since its inception in 2014. Over the course of three days, she will build a small toolbox of exercises and techniques that participants can incorporate into their future work. She will also discuss the ethical precautions to consider and share the challenges we have encountered in our work with citizen's theatre.

The workshop is suitable for professional performing artists, directors, playwrights, and actors who are interested in learning different ways to create theater from real life experiences. It also explores how it's possible to involve non-professionals in professional performances while maintaining artistic quality.

The workshop may also be of interest from an actor's perspective, as we constantly strive to cultivate a more authentic stage language where participants are not merely acting but are genuine individuals on stage.

In recent years, Bergen Citizen Stage has closely collaborated with citizen's theatre groups in Dresden and Kavà Kulturalis in Budapest. Havre brings with her the experiences from these collaborations. We also present tools for evaluating citizen's theatre and discuss how this form of theater can contribute to the development of performing arts and attacting new audiences.

The goal of Bergen CitizenStage is to explore what theater is and what it can be. In this work with storytellers the focus is always on speaking without fear and listening without judgment. These principles are fundamental to an active democracy and the foundation of all creative endeavors.
